Whether you have an iPhone 11, an iPhone 12 or one of the latest Apple models, it is essential to follow some preliminary steps to best prepare the device. Only after completing them can you proceed to remove water from the speakers, applying the specific techniques that I have included in this tutorial.
First of all, if your phone has fallen into water, the first thing to do is to turn it off (hold down the side button and one of the volume buttons and slide the slider shown). Once this is done, remove the cover and any accessories present, then use a soft, dry cloth to clean and dry the outside of the iPhone. Also focus on the openings, such as the USB-C (or Lightning) connector and the speakers, to remove visible water, but make sure not to insert anything into the openings, as this could push the water deeper.
If you do not have a soft cloth suitable for this operation, a microfiber one will do just fine.
To help drain the water from the speakers, you can also place the iPhone in a vertical position (with the speakers facing down) and leave it in this position for at least 30 minutes: this will help the water drain downwards. If the iPhone has been exposed to a large amount of water (e.g. it has been submerged), you may want to consider leaving it in this position for an hour or more.
Now that most of the work is completed and you have dried the surface of the iPhone, turn it on (by holding down the side button until the Apple logo appears) and prepare to follow the instructions that follow.
As anticipated, to perform the operation that is the subject of this guide, it is necessary to use solutions that offer sinusoidal frequencies to produce a constant sound capable of expelling the water through vibrations. Specifically, you can use a shortcut, a website or an application of this type. Below we will see how to remove water from the iPhone speakers using each of these methods.
Water Eject
Water Eject is a shortcut that will vibrate your iPhone until excess water is expelled from the speakers. You can use it through the Apple Shortcuts app, which is already installed by default on your device (but you can also download it from the App Store, if you have previously removed it) and which allows you to create quick commands and automations useful for performing common operations in a few moments with a tap. More info here.
To get started, tap on this link from Safari on iPhone, to access the Water Eject page, then press the (+) Add Shortcut button. Now open the Shortcuts app by tapping on its icon on the Home screen or in the App Library of your iPhone, then tap the box relating to the Water Eject command that you just downloaded.
Now, from the small menu that opens, select the Begin option (be sure to first position the phone vertically with the speakers facing downwards and to turn up the volume to facilitate the flow of water). After a short countdown, your iPhone's speakers will start to expel water, producing a low vibration sound. You can decide to wait for the process to finish or interrupt it by tapping the Stop symbol (the square inside the circle) in the Water Eject box. Alternatively, you can choose the Touch option, which will allow your iPhone to continue emitting the sound until you decide to stop it, again by tapping the Stop symbol in the shortcut box. Through the Settings menu item, instead, you will have the possibility to share the shortcut, read the version information or send feedback to the developers via email.
Once this process is finished, it's time to check the result! Try playing a song on your iPhone. If the audio is back to normal, congratulations! You just solved the problem! If, however, you still notice that the sound "crackles", don't worry: you can repeat the process or consider other options, such as those below.
Fix My Speakers
Fixmyspeakers.com is a website designed to solve the problem of water trapped in smartphone speakers, including iPhones. It uses a system that produces a high-pitched sound that is specifically designed to generate vibrations that help remove water from the speakers with ease.
To use this solution, take your iPhone and visit the tool's website, manage cookies and press the button with the air and water drops emoji (you may have to scroll to find it) to start the sound at a constant frequency.
While the sound is playing, make sure to place your iPhone with the speakers facing down and turn the volume up, to help the water drain out more easily. Let the sound play for at least a minute, then press the button with the air and water drops emoji again to stop it. Then try playing a song to see if the audio quality is back to normal. If the problem persists, you can repeat the process.
Sonic
The Sonic app can be useful for removing water from iPhone speakers. It uses the same principle as the previous solutions and therefore uses specific frequency sounds to generate vibrations that help expel the water present in the speakers. It is basically free, but in-app purchases are offered to remove advertising and unlock extra features (starting at €1.99).
To use this solution, download and install the app in question from the App Store, then launch it by tapping on its icon, follow the presentation tutorial and press the (x) at the top right of the Premium plan presentation screen.
Once you reach the Sonic main screen, press the play symbol at the bottom right of the page: the app will start to produce a prolonged sound, which will facilitate the release of liquid from the speakers. Again, I recommend that you position the iPhone vertically and turn up the volume to facilitate the process. When the percentage visible at the top left reaches 100%, the process will stop by itself (if you want to stop it before, press the Stop button at the bottom right).
Then try to play some music and, if the problem is not solved, repeat the operation (possibly by tapping on 60, at the top right, to start playing for one minute).
